These Theologians of the early Christian faith are credited as contributing indispensable and essential knowledge and understanding to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Through their discernment of scriptures they provided in forming the theological structure of the Church. Their wisdom and theology is as insightful today as it was in the early historical days of our Church! In fact, if you thought the "New Age" movement to be something "New" than you have not read their great treatsies against heresies of the Faith. They have been defeating such notions for centuries!

Saint Augustine of Hippo was not always a saintly man, but he was always a very intellectual thinker. After years of searching for "truth" he was was converted by the prayers of his mother (Saint Monica) and the help of Saint Ambrose of Milan (who baptized him). On the death of his mother he returned to the land of his birth, Africa. He sold his property, gave the proceeds to the poor, and founded a monastery. He later became the bishop of Hippo.
Augustine said, "Our hearts were made for You, O Lord, and they are restless until they rest in you."
His Feast day is celebrated August 28.

Saint Basil was one of the group of great theologians to whom we owe our theologically correct belief in the Holy Trinity and the Incarnation. Basil was also the chief organizer of ascetic community life in the East. In addition to his work as a theologian, Basil was known for his care of the poor and underprivileged
He was born in 329 at Caesarea, the capital of Cappadocia, far up in the interior of Asia Minor. A surprising number of his family are honored as saints: his grandmother is Saint Macrina the Elder. His father and mother are known as Saint Basil the Elder and Saint Emmelia. Basil's brothers are Saint Gregory of Nyssa and Saint Peter of Sebaste. Finally, we know his sister as Saint Macrina the Younger.
Saint Basil is quoted as saying, "The bread that you store up belongs to the hungry; the coat that lies in your chest belongs to the naked; the gold that you have hidden in the ground belongs to the poor."
Saint Basil is the Father of Eastern Monasticism and the Doctor of Monasticism. His Feast day is celebrated January 2.

Dionysius received a classical Greek education and even studied astonomy in Egypt (where he reported to witness a solar eclipse at the time of Jesus' crucifixion!) He baptized by Saint Paul in Athens and afterward witnessed the martrydom of Paul. Dionysius himself was martyred for his faith in Gaul. His martyrdom came after successfully converting many to the faith. He is remembered for his writing on Mystical Theology and the Divine Names. His feast day is celebrated on October 3.
A quotation from Dionysius:
"The simple, absolute, and unchangeable mysteries of heavenly Truth lie hidden in the dazzling obscurity of the secret Silence, outshining all brilliance with the intensity of their darkness, and surcharging our blinded intellects with the utterly impalpable and invisible fairness of glories which exceed all beauty!"

This item is the Saint Ephrem the Syrian Icon. He is the Doctor of Deacons and Poets. He is the only doctor known more as a deacon than a priest. Refugees, social workers, relief agents and others might petition Ephraem for more sensitivity in dealing with others.
Besides laying the groundwork for Orthodox monasticism, Ephrem made great contributions to the compositions of songs and hymns used in public worship. The hymns were most sensuous and sonorous. He was a deeply thoughtful and loving servant of God who had a tremendous devotion both to the humanity of Jesus and Mary.
Ephrem wrote:
Far more glorious than the body
is the soul,
and more glorious still than the soul
is the mind, (spirit)
but more hidden than the mind (spirit)
is the Godhead.
Ephrem's Feast day is celebrated on June 9.

Saint Gregory Nazianzus is known to us as the Doctor of Theologians. Gregory's most significant theological contributions arose from his defense of the Nicene doctrine of the Trinity and asserting that Jesus Christ shared two separate and distinct natures - one was fully human and the other fully Divine. He also taught on the theology concerning the nature of the Holy Spirit.
Gregory was a personal friend of Saint Basil and together they founded a monastery. Their feast day is celebrated together on January 2.
Saint Gregory was known to have said, "We must remember God more often than we draw breath."

Saint John earned the title "Chrysostom" which translates into "golden mouthed". This title was bestowed upon him in remembrance of his eloquent style of preaching. His words were always precise in explaining the scriptures and faith. He was able to inspire many hearts and teach many souls the faith.
There exists many of his published orations for which the Church is thankful for. He once said, "God asks little, but He gives much."
His feast day is September 13.
In a homily Saint John taught:
"The reading of the divine Scriptures is not a meadow only, but a paradise; for the flowers here have not a mere fragrance only, but fruit too, capable of nourishing the soul."

Origen Adamantius was an early Christian scholar, theologian, and one of the most distinguished of the early fathers of the Christian Church. According to tradition, he is held to have been an Egyptian who taught in Alexandria. His teaching on the Divinity of the Son and the Father and of Trinitarianism formed the basis of much systematic theology. He is also credited with teaching how important the need for "Spiritual Direction" is for the faithful.
He is said to have lived out the commands of the Savior to not possess two coats, nor wear shoes.
Using his knowledge of Hebrew, he translated the Septuagint Bible. He wrote commentaries on all the books of the Bible and Saint Jerome is known to have said that Origen wrote more than any individual could read!
Origin wrote of prayer:
"He who prays must lift up holy hands, forgiving everyone who has wronged him, with the passion of anger banished from his soul and in wrath with none. And again, to prevent his mind from being made turbid by irrelevant thoughts, he must while at prayer forget for the time everything outside prayer—surely a state of supreme blessedness!"
